My Social Action Project:

The Cat Shack

Educational component - The project's educational component is highly effective. It exposes students to real-world issues related to animal welfare, empathy, and community engagement. Students not only learn about these topics in theory but also get hands-on experience through volunteering and participating in fundraising activities. This practical exposure helps in reinforcing the importance of compassion and community involvement.

My Learning Experience: The learning experience for me as a student is invaluable. It provided me with a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom. It taught me essential life skills, such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and leadership. I also gained a sense of responsibility as we had to ensure we get enough donations for the care and nurture of these animals at The Cat Shack, which translated into empathy for other living beings and a strong sense of ethical behaviour.

Community Impact: The project has a substantial positive impact on the community. It brings people together, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared values. Residents become more aware of the importance of animal welfare, and this can translate into responsible pet ownership and a decrease in the number of abandoned animals. Additionally, the project created a sense of pride in the community by showcasing its compassion and willingness to make a difference.

Charity Component: The charity aspect of the project is highly effective. The Cat Shack's mission to rescue, care for, and rehome cats was directly supported by Crawford International School Bedfordview during my teaching experience. This project helped with donations and improve the overall well-being of the cats and animals in the care of The Cat Shack.

Community Relationships: The Cat Shack project fostered community relationships. It provided a platform for people to meet and connect with like-minded individuals who share their passion for animal welfare. These relationships can extend beyond the project, leading to more profound and lasting community connections.

How has Service-Learning Changed you personally?

Increased Empathy: Engaging in service-learning exposed me to different people, communities, and causes that I was not familiar with. This exposure increased my empathy as I come to understand the challenges and needs of others. The Cat Shack made me realise how many animals needs to be cared for that don't have forever homes yet.

Enhanced Sense of Responsibility: This Service-learning project instilled a sense of responsibility toward me, the community and the world at large. When individuals actively participate in projects that benefit others, they may develop a stronger commitment to making a positive impact. My responsibility during this project enhanced because I needed to ensure that we get donations to be able to help and support The Cat Shack.

Improved Communication and Interpersonal Skills: My communication skills improved because I completed my Social Action project together with another 4th year student and we had to communicate all the time what was happening, what and when we are doing something, communicate information about The Cat Shack and donations etc.

Expanded Perspective: Engaging in this service-learning project has broaden my perspective on various issues, it also fostered a more open-minded and well-rounded worldview for me. This Social Action Project has contributed to my own personal growth and greater understanding of the world and the issues we are surrounded with.

Building Lasting Relationships: This Service-learning involved me to working closely with others who share similar values and goals. This lead to the formation of lasting friendships and professional connections.

Sense of Fulfilment and Happiness: Engaging in this service learning project contributed to a sense of fulfilment and happiness within me. Knowing that I am making a positive impact on the lives of animals has brought me a profound sense of joy and satisfaction.

How has Service-Learning developed you professionally? What new knowledge, skills and attitudes have you gained?

Teamwork and Collaboration: This Service-learning project involved working with a diverse group of people, including a fellow student, shelter staff, and community members. This experience has develop strong teamwork and collaboration skills within me, which are vital in almost any professional setting.

Communication Skills: Effective communication is a critical skill in any profession. Volunteering at the Cat Shack has improved my ability to communicate with colleagues, superiors, and the public. Explaining the shelter's mission, interacting with potential adopters, and conducting educational seminars all require clear and effective communication. I also used a lot of communication with my fellow student that also participated in this social action project with me. We had to communicate all necessary details to ensure this project was successful.

Time Management and Organization: Managing donations, coordinating venues, collecting and dropping off donations for the cats required excellent time management and organization. These skills can be highly valuable in any profession where efficiency and organization are key such as teaching.

Empathy and Compassion: Exposure to the challenges faced by abandoned animals has deepen my sense of empathy and compassion. These qualities can be valuable in professions involving teaching, or any field where understanding and supporting others is essential.
